Pitch Perfect

OK, normally I would have passed this movie up without a second thought. I don't watch Glee. I don't watch movies about singing or dancing or performing arts or whatever. But a little over a year ago, I saw an ad on the Comcast onDemand ad channel for Pitch Perfect. I saw Anna Kendrick and heard girls singing a sort of remixed version to a popular song. I love Anna Kendrick. But still I passed. I could not justify paying $5.99 for what I was afraid would be a turkey.

A few months later, I was changing channels, and came across Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta belting out their own versions and mashups of classic Rock n' Roll songs in Rock of Ages. I couldn't stop watching. I found it onDemand and watched it over and over. So I was hooked. A new genre for me. I have always liked remixes and mashups. In high school I loved seeing the cheerleaders and dance team bust a move to this kind of music.

So, Pitch Perfect....

The story centers around the rivalry of two very talented college a capella singing groups. I loved all the nerd jokes, because people who get involved in this kind of thing are normally called "nerds" apparently. It was light though there were some mean spirited jokes. Anna Kendrick plays the lead:  a girl, a DJ, reluctant to go to college because she wants to follow her dream of going to LA to become a music producer. Along with Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow.

The girls are the "A Capella Bellas," (eye candy) and the boys are "The Treble Makers." The boys are the award-winning group; the girls pursing the title.

There were some hilarious and romantic moments, but overall, I would recommend the movie for the music. Like I said, I've never been into this kind of music, but listening to these groups sing all the parts, including the instrumentals, to these great songs really sold the movie to me, especially the mashups. I found the soundtrack on Spotify.

IMDb gives this film a 7.3 star overall rating. The toast gives an 8-8.5. I loved this movie! Maybe not the coolest movie, but so much fun to watch.
